Fat Tuesday on stage

Fat Tuesday started in Minneapolis in the late 1980s. The original lineup—Andrew Crowley (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Michael Provence (guitar), Scott Kapp (bass), and Scott Anderson (drums)—built their foundation on a relentless work ethic. Rehearsing seven days a week, the band became incredibly tight, cutting their teeth on local dates before packing into a van for heavy touring and self-releasing their 1989 debut cassette, So Much More.

Word got around the local clubs, eventually earning a kind recommendation from Bill Batson (frontman for The Mighty Mofos and soundman at the 7th Street Entry), who pointed the band out to Jake Wisely, a young whiz kid running Red Decibel alongside the Twin/Tone Records ecosystem. Wisely approached the group, a connection that quickly led to the release of their “Joy” / “Locoweed” 7-inch.

After navigating a maze of indie distribution ties involving Caroline and Metal Blade, the band signed a joint deal with Red Decibel and Columbia Records. That partnership produced two full-length albums: Califuneral (1992) and Everybody’s Got One (1993), with Brian Timm stepping in on guitar for the latter. The single “High & Low” picked up national radio play, accompanied by a music video shot right in the middle of Uptown Minneapolis by directing duo Phil Harder and Rick Fuller.

Later on, guitarist Jim (Jazz) Byers joined the lineup. The band put out the Clouds 7-inch and the “Winter Storm” video, capping off a solid, hard-working run through the thick of the 1990s rock era.
